In case you missed them or wanted to read them again, we’re posting the words in the lovely presentation that Leslie Ann Hebb made to Dorothy and John at their “retirement” reception today (Sunday May 27). Leslie really captured what a lot of us feel about Dorothy and John and the contributions they’ve made to our parish over the last number of years. Thank you Leslie, for your beautiful words! 🙂

Dear John and Dorothy

When I thought about what to say to you, Dorothy, these words from Paul’s letters came to mind …

“We always thank God, the Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, when we pray for you, because we have heard of your faith in Christ Jesus and of the love you have for all God’s people”

– AND –

“How can we thank God enough for you in return for all the joy we have in the presence of our God because of you?”

Before I even met you, these words were true for me because of the blessing you are to my mum. Now that Chris and I have returned to BC and our beloved St. Marks I can thank God not only for what I have heard about you but what I have experienced.

I read once that there are some people who are really, really easy to like and very, very hard to say Good-bye to. That is true of you and John …. Your St. Mark’s family truly hopes that we will be seeing you again. Still, at this time it is right that we say “Thank You” …. not just to God in our prayers, but to you personally:

➢ Thank you for your gentle, gracious presence. Your kindness and love for people seem to flow effortlessly. I believe it is the overflow of the Holy Spirit that is great in you and is a gift to all of us

➢ Thank you for sharing your gift of hospitality with us … I remember coming to a luncheon you hosted here at St. Mark’s and being charmed by your intelligence and wit. I understand you and John were Chaplains for the retired clergy, putting on lunches twice per year. Surely, they too have enjoyed these gifts.

➢ Thank you for supporting John so well. He makes no secret of the fact that your love is a pillar in his life. In supporting him you have supported all of us.

➢ Thank you for your wisdom and faith, especially how you shared it with us on Sunday mornings leading us through the Prayers of the People. I remember the first time I was in the congregation for one of your Intercessor days. I was compelled to turn around to see who had the lovely voice that was wrapping around my heart and soul like velvet … the one whose words were so brilliantly and carefully … faithfully and lovingly chosen. The experience of praying under your guidance is a treasure!

➢ Finally, thank you for the myriad things you do behind the scenes. You do them without fanfare … out of deep faith and love. One of my favourite Bible verses Galatians 5:6 reads, “The only thing that counts is faith expressing itself through love.” In that regard, I believe you have stored up for yourself many rewards in heaven, and here on earth you are a shining light for all of us.

You have our love, respect and deep gratitude. God bless you!
